Finance Forum, January 9. According to the directive issued by the newly-appointed Director General of Iran Customs Mirashrafi, recently Iran Customs has taken some urgent measures to accelerate the clearance of import goods for the purpose of reducing the overstock of goods in the Iranian ports. Iran Customs claimed that, within the past nine months by the end of 21 December, 2018, the overstocked goods in 18,900 out of 42,000 containers have been abandoned. A customs officer declared that, according to the emergency plan of the Customs, the abandoned containers in Bandar Abbas will be completed customs clearance within one week.

The importers made many complaints in the customs conference, including complicated registration formalities of import orders, missing deadline, allocation of foreign exchange, expiry of trade card, etc. In June of last year, Iranian government enacted an import ban of 1,339 commodities out of 20 classes (please click the link to view the details), which led to clearance failure of related goods. According to new regulations, the current government will allow related goods to free trade zone and special economic zone.

Moreover, due to the U.S. sanctions against Iran, Iranian ship routes are in an emergency! During July-October, 2018, shipping companies such as Maersk, MSC and shipping giants, such as CMA CGM, OOCL, PIL, etc. have exited Iranian shipping market in succession and stopped receiving Iran’s import and export goods.

According to Iran’s local media, president of Iran Shipping Association Massoud Polmeh said that, many of global ports rejected entry and berthing of Iran-flagged vessels.

Polmeh denounced that the U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran led to many ports rejecting entry and berthing of Iran-flagged vessels. Polmeh disclosed that some of the ports belong to Iran’s friendly and brother nations, for example, Russia and China.

Moreover, he also said that, since the American withdrawal from Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the Iran Nuclear Deal between Teheran and the world powers, 20 international shipping companies have closed their offices in Iranian ports.
